What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting (BSP) is a powerful, focused therapeutic method that helps access, process, and release trauma, emotional pain, and somatic distress.
Discovered by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting works by identifying and engaging specific eye positions that correlate with unprocessed trauma stored in the brain and body.
It taps into the brain’s natural ability to heal itself, bypassing the thinking mind and directly connecting with deeper, subcortical areas where trauma is held.
How Does Brainspotting Work?
During a Brainspotting session, you and I will work together to find a “brainspot”—an eye position linked to a significant emotional or physical response. This brainspot acts as a doorway to access the areas of your brain that are holding onto trauma.
By maintaining focused attention on this spot while allowing your body and mind to process freely, the brain can begin to reorganize, integrate, and ultimately heal from past wounds.
Brainspotting relies heavily on the attunement and connection between therapist and client. This means I will create a grounded, safe space for you to explore and process at your own pace.
Brainspotting can be done with or without talking, allowing the body to guide the process intuitively.
Why is Brainspotting Effective for Trauma and PTSD?
Traditional talk therapy engages the thinking part of the brain (the neocortex), that really isn’t designed to access deep-rooted trauma. Brainspotting works differently by connecting with the subcortical brain, where trauma is stored outside of conscious awareness.
This deeper level of processing often leads to profound shifts, allowing for:
- Reduction in PTSD Symptoms: Clients report significant decreases in flashbacks, hyperarousal, and emotional dysregulation.
- Emotional Release and Relief: Long-held emotional pain can surface and be processed in a gentle yet powerful way.
- Physical Healing: Many clients experience relief from physical symptoms linked to trauma, such as headaches, chronic pain, and fatigue.
- Greater Self-Awareness and Resilience: Brainspotting often leads to enhanced emotional clarity and the development of new coping strategies.
Who Can Benefit from Brainspotting?
Brainspotting is highly effective for treating trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges. It can also be beneficial for:
- Athletes, performers, and creatives seeking to overcome performance blocks
- Individuals dealing with chronic pain or medical trauma
- Those navigating grief, loss, or attachment wounds
- Anyone feeling stuck or overwhelmed by life experiences
What to Expect in a Session
A typical Brainspotting session lasts 50-60 minutes. We will begin by discussing your goals and any areas of distress. Using either a pointer or your natural eye movement, I will guide you to find a brainspot that feels significant. From there, you will focus on this spot while tuning into any emotions, thoughts, or sensations that arise. I will be there to support and guide you through the process, ensuring you feel safe and grounded.
